Mind the Border! Introduction to the Special Issue

The Special Issue is aimed at exploring from the theoretical and empirical points of view the concept of border in contemporary cultural psychology. Borders is an innovative multidisciplinary theoretical construct that is raising interest in human and social sciences. Different psycho-social processes can be explored and understood focusing on what happens on the border. From the perspective of cultural psychology, borders are the outcome of culturally organized processes which are not fixed, but based on a continuous organization and reorganization of the I-Other-World relationships. Borders are not rigid and durable delimitations, but they are processes of semiotic configuration that make possible human actions in a given environment.

Research Is Literature: Exploring Borders Between Arts And Sciences

I draw on Fathali Moghaddam´s expression from his 2004 article “Psychology is Literature”, to expand that idea and delineate the notion of “Research is Literature”. I will approach some borders between researching and writing, trying to answer three specific questions from a personal point of view: first, when we write about our research, are we doing research? Second: are we already researching when we think about doing research? And lastly, are we doing research when we publish?

The Psychological Border Dynamism: a Comprehension from a Clinical Systemic Focus

In the clinical field it has been found that when consultants came close to extreme or intense situations for them, they reported to feel “un-bordered”. They expressed not to know who they were among the personal tools and resources with which they could count on to face and respond to the demands of the outside world. I ask: What is the nature of the psychological border? Is it possible to consider the dynamism of the psychological border to behave as it happens with the changes in the state of matter? Under what circumstances does it become more firm or softer? How could its volatile, changing and dynamic nature be understood? What relation is there with the emotions and the self-perception of the psychological border?

Borders of Poetic Self Construction: Dialogues between Cultural Psychology and Performing Arts

This article aims to discuss notions and processes related to Performing Arts, regarding the creative work of the actor. We argue that human action is structured by symbolic images of aesthetic synthesis that emerge throughout time and that result from the elaboration of their experiences in the world. This study addresses how the various layers that constitute the self (intrapersonal alterities) are in dialogue; we argue that the space of aesthetic construction of reality is precisely the border between these layers.

Borders of Discourse?

This article aims to discuss a fundamentally different approach to discourse analysis by using a pragmatic point of departure for understanding use of language. Using an empirical example from a construction project it is discussed how material as well as societal dimensions of collaboration functions as borders for transformations of discourse – and these dimensions are most often intertwined.
