Previous Issues - November 2014
This November issue of Psychology & Society features individual submissions that span a wide range of topics. Bastos and Guimarães reflect on the relationship between researcher and subject in the context of conducting research in cultural psychology. Feehan presents a thematic analysis of Facebook users, identifying a code of being that structures self-presentation concerns. Haque examines achievement motivation among college students, focusing on the ambivalence that can arise from mulitple socio-cultural identities. Spjeldnæs explores the concept of mothering among adolescents in South Africa. Keipi integrates the social identity model of deindividuation effects with self determination theory to provide a new framework for understanding internet use amongst youth.

Cultural-affective bonds in field-research: Towards a semiotic-constructivist understanding of circus daily life

This paper is about a fundamental issue for both theoretical and methodological researches in the field of dialogical cultural psychology: the inherent tensions in the self-other relationships that emerge from approximations and estrangements imposed by field research situations. This matter is discussed both in terms of the affective bonds between the researcher and the participants, and in relation to the personal involvement of the researcher with the object of study.

“…there is kind of a way about being on Facebook”: A Thematic Analysis of the production of Self-Presentation on the Social Networking Site Facebook

This study is a qualitative enquiry into the process of presenting the self via an online Facebook profile. Both motivation and construction of the participants’ desired impressions were accounted for. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. An implicit code of being appears to guide in their behaviour.

Implications of College Peer Culture on Achievement Motivation

The current study focuses on the impacts of peer culture during the college years on students’ development of achievement motivation. A particular focus was placed on the role of ambivalence in making decisions regarding achievement motivation as well as on personal definitions of academic success. Interview data revealed several models of achievement motivation development.

Mothering in Limpopo, South Africa: Perspectives of Adolescents

Mothering is recognized as important in shaping adolescent children’s identity cross-culturally, but how people understand and practice mothering varies between social contexts. In post-apartheid South Africa, the institution of the family is undergoing changes that affect mothering. This study aimed to explore how 22 adolescents in the Mankweng area in the impoverished Limpopo Province understand mothering.

This work aims to detect the cultural models that organize cybersex discourse, from an analysis of the Italian press, in order to overcome an individualistic and medicalized paradigm proposed by mainstream research. A text analysis based on social representation theory was conducted on a corpus of 52 articles from the major national newspapers and allowed the exploration of the social representation of the phenomenon.
